Bullying can happen anywhere: face-to-face, by text messages or on the web. It is not limited by age, gender, or education level. It is not a phase and it is not a joke. Bullying can cause lasting harm!
The problem I see about Bullying is that it’s been around for more than 50 Years. Everyone is talking about it, the Government states that they are doing something about it, but what’s really happening?
As a kid in Grammar School I was bullied. Nobody did anything about it accept me. As I got older I said to myself I would not put up with it. When in High School I did not put up with it. I fought back and the bullies stayed away. The problem is you still have to watch your back and stay tough. I went in the Navy when I was 18 and retired 21 years later.
Ladies and gentlemen it’s still there. You read about it in the papers, hear it on the news, and see it on the internet.
Statics state that 1 of every 3 kids in Middle School is being bullied, but many go unreported. Nationally, 8.2 million students are bullied each year and 1 million are cyber-bullied. About 160,000 students stay home from school on any given day because they’re afraid of being bullied. In Delaware, nearly 20 percent of students surveyed last year reported that another student issued a verbal threat against them, while 30 percent reported that they said something to another student to hurt them.
Legislation in Delaware was unveiled March 2, 2012 will protect students against bullying and make the reporting of bullying more consistent. It’s hoped that with this legislation, more incidents of bullying will be reported to the Attorney General’s bullying hotline. The number for the Hotline is 1-800-220-5414.
We need to stop this bulling once and for all.
